Governor Signs FOIA Reforms

Today Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed SB 189 into law-- a major reform of the Freedom of Information Act. INBA praises the Governor for implementing these reforms without exercising his amendatory veto power.

INBA members were among the many voices which urged Quinn to take swift action on these reforms. The signing comes after weeks of uncertainty. Several groups, most notably the Illinois Municipal League, had organized in opposition of the bill.

While not a complete reform of FOIA, the new measure, which takes effect in January, eliminates loopholes and provides swifter recourse for those who seek information from government agencies in Illinois.

Many thanks to all INBA members who took time to call, write, or e-mail the Governor's office on this important issue!
