INBA Joins in Blagojevich Retrial Petition

The Illinois News Broadcasters Association joined the Chicago Tribune, Illinois Broadcasters Association and the Illinois Press Association in urging Judge James Zagel to keep former Governor Rod Blagojevich's upcoming retrial as open as possible.

In the petition, INBA and the other parties ask that jury questionnaires be made public, and that juror names remain on the record. In Blagojevich's first trial, juror questionnaires were destroyed before the public had access to them. Vital information about the jury was lost.

This time, the court is also considering keeping juror names a secret until at least several hours after the verdict, and possibly never releasing them.

"The public has a right to know who is deciding Rod Blagojevich's guilt or innocence," said INBA President Jennifer Fuller. Fuller added, "it's important to know what background these citizens bring to the table."

The judge could rule on the petition this week.
