NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS – BIOGRAPHIES
Four INBA scholarships are given to college students each year in honor of six long-time members. The scholarships are alternated in the name of these individuals.

INBA’s Executive Secretary for the first nine years
The first INBA scholarship, begun in 1963, is named in his honor
He passed away at age 87 on December 18, 1996

Bill Miller (Alvin Pistorius)
Served in World War II earning a Bronze Star
1949 – 67 – WTAX-AM, Springfield
1967 – 74 – founder, Capitol Information Bureau, Springfield
1974 – 93 – directed the Public Affairs Reporting Program at Sangamon State
University (now UIS)
An INBA charter member, he earned the INBA Illinoisan of the Year award in 1989.
Charter member of the Illinois Freedom of Information Council
Won the 1966 Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio and Television News Directors
Association for stories about the sale of inferior furniture at Sangamon County
The second INBA scholarship was named in his honor on October 14, 1978
He passed away at age 80 on November 10, 2003.
Larry Wilson
1970 – 1985 – News Director at WSMI, Litchfield
Long time INBA Board member.
Organizer of and long time supporter of INBA Road Shows and active in involving
students in INBA activities.
The INBA Internship Award, beginning in 1986, wa given in his name, and is now a
a straight scholarship.
He passed away in June, 1985.
Ed Brown
Southern Illinois University – Carbondale professor
Long time INBA Executive Secretary, 1968 – 1983
He passed away at age 75, February 24, 2000.
Fred “Fritz” Sorenson
WKRS, Waukegan, reporter/anchor, beginning in 1948
WCIA-TV, Champaign, reporter/anchor
U. S. Cable, Waukegan, public affairs talk show host
His son, Eric, was executive producer of the CBS Evening News at the time of his death.
He was supportive of students who had an interest in a wide variety of courses and topics.
He passed away at age 67 in February, 1992.
Mary McAndrew
1964 – Graduated from Marymount College of Virginia

1969 – NBC News, various assignments and postings (reporter/anchor, writer, producer)
1987 – Mutual Broadcasting System, in New York City then in Chicago
1988 – WBBM-FM, Chicago – news reporter/anchor and public affairs host
1989 – WGCI-AM/FM, Chicago – reporter/anchor
1992 – Chicago bureau of USA Today on Television, reporter/field producer
1991 – USA Today, Chicago Bureau
1993 – WMAQ-TV/Chicago Sun-Times Suburban News Source, managing editor
1994 – American Red Cross/Chicago, communications director
1998 – American Medical Association/Chicago, public information officer
Mary was the daughter of one-time NBC news president William McAndrew, Sr.
She passed away at age 53, January 17, 1999
